The short answer
Most ADT batteries are ordinary and cheap: the panel uses a 12 V sealed lead-acid backup battery ($20-$35), and nearly every wireless sensor uses a CR123A or CR2032 lithium cell ($2-$5). You can change all of them yourself in under ten minutes - the only trick is putting the system on test mode first so you don't trigger a false alarm, and knowing how to clear the low-battery message afterwards.
Below: the battery for every ADT device (with model numbers), the replacement steps for each, how to fix a low-battery warning that won't clear, and what it costs if you'd rather have ADT come out. For account help, ADT's own line is 1-800-ADT-ASAP (1-800-238-2727); in an emergency call 911. This is an independent guide - we're not ADT.
If your system is old enough that the batteries are the least of its problems, we also cover when replacement beats repair. Want a straight answer on that now? Call ☎ (888) 207-7106 or get a free assessment.
First: put your ADT system in test mode (so the battery change doesn't call the police)
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT): ☎ (888) 207-7106
Opening a panel or sensor trips a tamper signal, and a battery swap can send a trouble report to the monitoring center. Put the system on test first - it takes 30 seconds and avoids a false-alarm call (and in some cities, a fine).
- From MyADT (easiest): log in at MyADT.com → System Management → Place System On Test → choose a duration (1-4 hours is plenty).
- From the ADT+ / Control app: Menu → System → Test mode (ADT Command and Pulse systems).
- By phone: call 1-800-ADT-ASAP, give your verbal password, and ask to be "placed on test" for an hour.
Disarm the system before you start. When you're done, the system comes off test automatically at the end of the window - you don't need to call back. Can't put it on test? You can still change sensor batteries while disarmed; just expect a "trouble" or "tamper" message that clears once the cover is back on.

ADT panel battery replacement (Safewatch Pro 3000, Vista, Command, Pulse)
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT): ☎ (888) 207-7106

The panel backup battery keeps the system running through a power outage. It lasts 3-5 years, and when it's dying you'll see "LOW BATT", "BAT", "System Low Battery", or hear a beep every 30-60 seconds. Which battery you need depends on your panel:
| Panel | Where the battery is | Battery | Typical price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safewatch Pro 3000 / Vista-10P / Vista-15P / Vista-20P (keypad on wall, grey metal box in a closet or basement) | Inside the metal control box | 12 V sealed lead-acid, 4 Ah to 7 Ah (e.g. Power Sonic PS-1240 / PS-1270, UB1270). ADT's own part is often listed as 12 V 5 Ah | $18-$35 |
| ADT Command (7-inch touchscreen, models ADT7AIO / ADT5AIO / 2X16 AIO) | Behind the panel's back cover | Rechargeable Li-ion pack, Resideo/Honeywell part 300-10186 (3.6 V) | $25-$45 |
| ADT Pulse TS base station / TS keypad | Inside the base / keypad | 7.4 V Li-ion pack, 2400-2500 mAh | $25-$40 |
| ADT Pulse (older Netgear/iHub systems) | Inside the gateway | Varies - check the label | $15-$30 |
| DSC Impassa / PowerSeries (some ADT regions) | Inside the panel | 6 V NiMH pack (Impassa) or 12 V 4 Ah SLA (PowerSeries) | $15-$30 |
How to change the Safewatch Pro 3000 / Vista panel battery:
- Put the system on test and disarm it.
- Open the metal control box (a small key or a screw on the door). Don't unplug the transformer - leaving AC on means the panel keeps its programming.
- Unclip the red (+) lead, then the black (-) lead from the old battery. Lift it out.
- Seat the new battery, connect black first, then red. Match the terminal size (F1 or F2 tabs - most Vista batteries use F1).
- Close the box. The panel may still show LOW BATT for up to 24 hours while the new battery charges - that's normal. To clear the message sooner, see the low-battery warning section.
Does the 7 Ah fit? It's taller than the 4 Ah. If it doesn't fit your box, buy the 4 Ah - both work. ADT Command panel: power down from Settings → Power Off, remove the panel from its wall bracket, swap the 300-10186 pack behind the rear cover, remount, and let it boot (2-3 minutes). Safewatch Pro 3000 beeping after the swap? Press [code] + [1] (OFF) twice to silence and clear.

ADT sensor battery replacement: door & window, motion, glass break, smoke, keypad, key fob
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT): ☎ (888) 207-7106

ADT's wireless sensors are mostly Honeywell/Resideo 5800-series devices, and the battery is printed inside the cover. If you can't read it, use this table:
| Device | Common ADT model(s) | Battery | Life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door / window sensor (larger white rectangle) | 5816, 5816WMWH | 1 × CR123A (3 V lithium) | 3-5 yrs |
| Door / window sensor (small, slim) | 5800MINI, 5820L, ADT Command DW | 1 × CR2032 (some use 2) or CR2450 | 2-5 yrs |
| Motion detector | 5800PIR, 5800PIR-RES, 5898 | 1 × CR123A (5898 uses 2) | 3-5 yrs |
| Glass break detector | 5853 | 1 × CR123A | 3-5 yrs |
| Smoke / heat detector | 5808W3, 5806W3 | 1 × CR123A (some older: 3 × AA) | 3-5 yrs |
| Carbon monoxide detector | 5800CO | Sealed - not replaceable; replace the unit at end-of-life (~6 yrs) | 6 yrs |
| Wireless keypad | 5828, 5828V | 3 × AA | 1-2 yrs |
| Wired keypad (6160, 6160RF, 6150) | - | No battery - powered by the panel. A 'low battery' on a wired keypad means the panel battery | - |
| Key fob / keychain remote | 5834-4 | 1 × CR2032 | 2-3 yrs |
| Flood / water sensor | 5821 | 1 × CR123A | 3-5 yrs |
| Wireless siren | 5800WAVE / ADT outdoor siren | 4 × AA or 6 V SLA (outdoor) | 2-3 yrs |
Door/window sensor (5816): slide a flat screwdriver into the slot at the bottom of the cover and lift. Pop out the CR123A, wait 10 seconds, insert the new one with + toward the spring, close the cover. Motion detector (5800PIR): press the tab at the bottom, hinge the front off, swap the CR123A (+ up), close - then walk past it to confirm the LED blinks. Glass break (5853): twist or unclip the cover, swap the CR123A, and leave the cover off for 30 seconds before closing so it re-registers. Smoke detector (5808W3): twist counter-clockwise off the base, replace the CR123A, twist back on - it will chirp once. Keypad (5828): slide the cover off the back, replace all three AAs together.
Buying batteries: any brand CR123A works - avoid cells with a bitter "child-safe" coating, which can break contact. Buy non-rechargeable lithium only; rechargeable RCR123A cells are a higher voltage and can damage the sensor. A 6-pack of CR123A is about $12; CR2032 coin cells are $1 each. Where to buy ADT panel batteries: any hardware store, Amazon, Batteries Plus, or MyADT.com → Order Batteries (ADT ships standard cells for most devices).

ADT low battery warning won't clear: how to reset it
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT): ☎ (888) 207-7106

Changed the battery and the panel still says LOW BATT or keeps beeping? Here's what's happening and how to clear it:
- Panel battery, just replaced: the new battery needs up to 24 hours on AC power to charge enough for the panel to stop complaining. It will clear on its own. To silence the beep in the meantime: enter your 4-digit code + [1] (OFF), twice.
- Sensor battery, just replaced: the panel checks sensors every 60-90 minutes. Either wait, or force a check-in by opening and closing the door/window (or walking in front of the motion) a couple of times, then enter code + [1] twice to clear the memory.
- Vista / Safewatch Pro 3000 trouble that won't clear: enter code + [1] twice. If "BAT" shows with no zone number, it's the panel battery; with a zone number, it's that sensor.
- ADT Command: tap the trouble banner → Acknowledge / Clear. If a sensor still shows low, open its tile under Settings → Sensors to see the actual battery level.
- After a power outage: "AC LOSS" plus "LOW BATT" together is normal for a few hours - the battery drained carrying the system. If it's still low a day after power returned, the battery is finished.
- Old ADT alarm keeps beeping with no monitoring: if you're no longer an ADT customer and just want it to stop, the only permanent fix is to disconnect both the transformer and the backup battery - the panel is dead without them. Replace the battery if you want it to keep working as a local alarm.
If the warning returns within days of a fresh battery, the sensor's radio or the panel's charging circuit is failing - at that point the sensor needs replacing (5816 door contacts are about $25-$35) or the panel needs service.
Panel still beeping after everything above? That's usually a dying panel, not a battery. Get an unbiased opinion on repair vs. replace - call ☎ (888) 207-7106 or get a free assessment.
ADT battery replacement cost: DIY vs. ADT service call vs. Quality Service Plan
DIY: $2-$5 per sensor battery, $18-$45 for a panel battery. Ten minutes of your time.
ADT service visit: if you're not on a service plan, ADT typically bills a trip charge of roughly $59-$99 plus parts - so $100+ for a battery you can buy for $25. Some older agreements include a 90-day or one-year equipment warranty that covers early failures, not routine batteries.
Quality Service Plan (QSP): ADT's optional add-on (about $7-$10/month, shown as "QSP" or "Extended Service" on your bill) covers service calls and repairs, and includes one free panel battery per year ordered through MyADT. Sensor batteries are generally not covered - ADT expects you to change those. If you're paying for QSP but have never used it, that's $84-$120 a year worth questioning on your next call with ADT. See our breakdown of what ADT really costs per month.
Does ADT replace batteries for free? Only the annual panel battery under QSP, or any battery during an active equipment warranty. Otherwise it's on you - which is why this guide exists.

When replacing the battery isn't worth it
A battery is worth replacing. A system that needs batteries, a cellular module, and a panel reset every few months usually isn't. Signs you've crossed that line:
- Your panel is a Safewatch Pro 3000 / Vista installed before ~2015 - it may still be on a 3G/CDMA cellular module that no longer communicates, which means the monitoring you pay for isn't reaching anyone.
- You've replaced the same sensor's battery twice in a year.
- ADT quotes a new panel - which typically comes with a new 36-month contract.
Your options: ADT's own upgrade (ask for the existing customer pricing and read the new term), a different pro-monitored company with a shorter contract (Brinks, Vivint), or a no-contract system you own outright (SimpliSafe, Ring, Cove) - several of which run sensors 5-10 years on one battery. If you're leaning that way, read how to cancel ADT without overpaying first.

Frequently asked questions
What battery does an ADT panel use?
Safewatch Pro 3000 and Vista panels use a 12 V 4-7 Ah sealed lead-acid battery. ADT Command uses a Resideo 300-10186 Li-ion pack. ADT Pulse TS units use a 7.4 V Li-ion pack.
What battery does an ADT door sensor use?
The common 5816 door/window sensor uses one CR123A. Slim sensors (5800MINI, Command DW) use a CR2032 or CR2450 coin cell. Check inside the cover.
What battery is in an ADT motion detector?
One CR123A 3 V lithium (the 5898 dual-tech model uses two).
How do I change the battery in an ADT alarm without setting it off?
Disarm, put the system on test via MyADT or by calling ADT, then swap the battery. A tamper message is normal and clears when the cover is closed.
How do I put my ADT system in test mode?
MyADT.com → System Management → Place System On Test; or in the ADT app under System; or call 1-800-238-2727.
Why does my ADT panel still say low battery after replacing it?
The new panel battery needs up to 24 hours to charge. Enter your code + 1 twice to silence the beep. If it's still low after a day, check the leads are on the right terminals.
Does ADT replace batteries for free?
One panel battery per year if you have the Quality Service Plan, and any battery under an active equipment warranty. Sensor batteries are normally your responsibility.
How much does ADT charge to replace a battery?
Without a service plan, expect a trip charge of roughly $59-$99 plus the part. The battery itself is $2-$45 depending on the device.
How long do ADT sensor batteries last?
Three to five years for CR123A sensors; one to two years for AA-powered keypads; the panel battery three to five years.
Can I use rechargeable batteries in ADT sensors?
No. Rechargeable RCR123A cells are 3.6-3.7 V, not 3 V, and can damage the sensor. Use standard non-rechargeable lithium.
