The short answer
The Honeywell (Ademco) Vista-20P is the panel inside millions of American homes - including every ADT Safewatch Pro 3000, most Brinks/Monitronics installs from the 2000s, and thousands of local-dealer systems. It's reliable, but the manual is 60 pages of installer language, so here's the owner's version: what the keypad messages mean, the key sequences you actually need (codes, chime, bypass, test, silence), how to change the battery, and what the dreaded Check 103 LngRng Radio / bF message really means for your monitoring.

Is your ADT system a Vista-20P? If the keypad says Safewatch Pro 3000, or it's a white Honeywell 6160 / 6150 keypad with a grey metal control box in a closet, yes. (Safewatch Pro 2000 = Vista-20SE; Safewatch Pro 3000EN = Vista-20P with Ethernet.) Everything below applies, with the ADT-specific notes called out.

Vista-20P keypad messages explained (CHECK, BAT, NOT READY, FC, bF, CA, dl, Busy-Standby)
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT or Honeywell): ☎ (888) 207-7106

| Keypad shows | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| NOT READY / Not Ready | A door, window or motion zone is open | Close the zone, or bypass it (code + 6 + zone) |
| CHECK + zone number | That sensor has a fault: tamper, cut wire, lost supervision, or dead battery | Open/close the cover, check wiring or battery, then code + 1 twice |
| BAT with no zone number | Panel backup battery low | Replace the 12 V battery (below); clears within 24 h of charging |
| BAT + zone number | That wireless sensor's battery is low | Replace the CR123A / CR2032 in that sensor |
| AC LOSS / NO AC | Panel transformer has no power | Check the outlet, breaker or GFCI; the beeping stops when AC returns |
| FC / COMM FAILURE | Panel couldn't reach the monitoring center (phone line or cellular) | Press code + 1 twice to clear; if it returns, see Check 103 |
| bF / 6F / Check 103 LngRng Radio | Long-range radio (cellular communicator) fault - the panel can't talk to the radio | See the Check 103 section; usually a dead or sunset communicator |
| CA / ALARM CANCELED | You disarmed within the cancel window - the alarm was canceled | Nothing - this is informational |
| dl / Downloading | Your alarm company is programming the panel remotely | Wait; don't touch the keypad |
| Busy-Standby | Panel is rebooting or the keypad lost contact with it | Wait 60 s; if stuck, power-cycle the panel |
| OC / Open Circuit | Keypad can't see the panel (wiring) or a zone loop is open | Check keypad wiring; otherwise a service call |
| E + zone / Exit Error | You armed and a door stayed open, or re-opened during exit delay | Disarm (code + 1), close the door, arm again |
| 8 / DISARMED CHIME | Chime mode is on | Toggle with code + 9 |
Fixed-word keypads (6150) show the short codes on the left; alphanumeric keypads (6160, 6160RF) show the words. Same panel, same fixes.

Vista-20P codes: master code, installer code, add or delete user codes
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT or Honeywell): ☎ (888) 207-7106

The Vista-20P has three kinds of codes. The installer code (factory default 4112; ADT installs often use 6321 or a dealer-specific code) gets into programming - you shouldn't need it. The master code (factory default 1234) arms, disarms, and manages users. User codes (users 03-49) arm and disarm.
Change the master code
Current master code → [8] → [0][2] → new 4-digit code → new 4-digit code again. Keypad beeps once to confirm.
Add a user code
Master code → [8] → two-digit user number (03 to 49) → new 4-digit code. Example: 1234 8 03 5678 creates user 03 with code 5678.
Delete a user code
Master code → [8] → user number → [#][0].
Forgot the master code? If you know the installer code: installer code → [8][0][2] → new master → new master. If you don't, your alarm company can reset it remotely in a minute (that's what the dl message is). There is no owner-level "factory reset" without a code - that's a security feature, not a bug. Powering the panel down does not erase codes.
ADT note: ADT normally keeps the installer code to itself. If you've canceled ADT and want to keep the system as a local alarm, change the master code immediately - the old installer code is widely known - and ask a local alarm company about a "takeover" (they'll reset the installer code and can monitor it for $15-$25/month).
Locked out of your own panel and your alarm company won't help? That's one of the most common reasons people replace an old Vista system. Find out what a modern no-contract system costs before you pay for a service call - call ☎ (888) 207-7106 or get a free assessment.
Everyday Vista-20P key sequences: arm, disarm, chime, bypass, test, silence
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT or Honeywell): ☎ (888) 207-7106
| What you want | Press | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Disarm / silence an alarm or trouble beep | code + [1] (OFF) | Press it twice to also clear the trouble memory |
| Arm Away (leaving) | code + [2] | Exit delay beeps; leave through the entry door |
| Arm Stay (home at night) | code + [3] | Motions off, doors/windows on |
| Arm Instant (Stay, no entry delay) | code + [7] | |
| Arm Maximum (Away, no entry delay) | code + [4] | |
| Chime on/off | code + [9] | Keypad shows DISARMED CHIME when on |
| Bypass a zone (e.g. a door you want open) | code + [6] + two-digit zone | Bypass clears when you disarm |
| Test mode (walk test) | code + [5] | Keypad shows each sensor as you trip it; code + 1 to exit. Put the system on test with your monitoring company first. |
| Quick arm (if enabled) | [#] + [2] / [#] + [3] | Arms without a code |
| Panic / fire / medical | Hold the A, B or C key (or [1]+[*], [*]+[#], [3]+[#]) | Sends a dispatch - don't test these |
| View zone descriptors / trouble detail | [*] (hold) | Alpha keypads scroll through faulted zones |
Alarm going off for no reason? Disarm, then press [*] to see which zone tripped. Repeated false alarms from one zone almost always mean a loose magnet, a failing sensor, or a motion aimed at a vent or sunny window.
Panel beeping every minute and you can't make it stop? That's normally a battery or an AC fault - see the next section - but if the system is 15+ years old it may be time to compare - call ☎ (888) 207-7106 or get a free assessment.
Vista-20P battery replacement (and why BAT keeps coming back)
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT or Honeywell): ☎ (888) 207-7106

The Vista-20P uses a 12 V sealed lead-acid backup battery, 4 Ah to 7 Ah - the same cell sold for emergency lights and UPS units ($18-$35 at any hardware store or online; common part numbers PS-1240, PS-1270, UB1270). It lasts 3-5 years. The panel shows BAT with no zone number and beeps once a minute when it's done.
- Put the system on test with your monitoring company (or disarm it, if unmonitored).
- Open the grey metal control box - a small key or a screw on the door. Leave the transformer plugged in so the panel keeps its programming.
- Unclip the red (+) lead, then the black (-) lead. Lift the battery out.
- Seat the new battery; connect black first, then red. Match the terminal tab size (F1 is standard for Vista).
- Close the box. BAT may stay on for up to 24 hours while the new battery charges. To silence the beep meanwhile: code + 1 twice.
BAT still showing after 48 hours? Check the leads are on the right terminals, then test the transformer output: the panel needs ~16.5 VAC from the wall-wart (16.5 VAC 25 VA or 40 VA, about $20). A dead transformer means the battery never charges - the panel runs the battery flat, you replace it, it goes flat again. BAT with a zone number is a sensor battery, not the panel - see the sensor battery table (5816 door contacts take a CR123A, 5800PIR motions a CR123A, 5800MINI contacts a CR2032).
Replaced the battery twice and it's still beeping? Something upstream is failing - we'll help you decide between a transformer, a tech visit, or retiring the panel - call ☎ (888) 207-7106 or get a free assessment.
Check 103 LngRng Radio / bF / 6F: what it means and the honest fix
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT or Honeywell): ☎ (888) 207-7106

This is the message that ends most Vista-20P systems. Check 103 (alpha keypads) or bF (fixed-word - often misread as 6F) means the panel can't communicate with its long-range radio - the cellular communicator that sends alarms to the monitoring center. While it shows, your system is not reporting: the siren still sounds, but nobody is dispatched.
Try first (fixes it maybe 20% of the time):
- Press code + 1 twice to clear the trouble.
- If it returns within an hour, power-cycle: unplug the transformer, disconnect the battery, wait 60 seconds, reconnect battery then transformer.
- Check that the communicator's antenna is connected and the module's LEDs are lit (inside or beside the control box).
Why it usually doesn't fix it: most Vista-20P communicators installed before 2017 are 3G/CDMA (Honeywell GSMV, GSMX, LTE-less ADT SafeWatch modules). Carriers shut those networks down in 2022, so the radio has nothing to talk to - the panel reports Check 103 forever. ADT and other companies sent replacement notices; many homes never got the swap. If your system is older than ~2017 and shows 103/bF constantly, this is almost certainly it.
The real options:
- Replace the communicator with an LTE unit (Honeywell LTE-XV / LTE-XA, Alarm.com or Telguard LTE modules): $150-$250 installed through your monitoring company or a local takeover company. The rest of your Vista system keeps working.
- ADT's answer is usually a new ADT Command panel - with a new 36-month agreement. Ask specifically for the "LTE communicator upgrade only" before accepting a full replacement; see our ADT cellular failure guide.
- Retire the panel. If the Vista is 15-20 years old and sensors are failing too, a modern no-contract system ($200-$400) is often cheaper than communicator + sensor repairs - and you keep the old one as a local siren or remove it.
Not on ADT and the company that installed it is gone? Any licensed alarm company that services Honeywell panels can do a takeover: new communicator, new installer code, $15-$30/month monitoring. The how to find a local alarm company checklist covers what to ask.
Check 103 and your company wants $600 for a new panel? Get an independent second opinion first - sometimes a $200 communicator is all it needs; sometimes it isn't - call ☎ (888) 207-7106 or get a free assessment.
How to reset a Vista-20P (soft reset, hard reset, and what a 'factory reset' really means)
Stuck after these steps? Independent help (not ADT or Honeywell): ☎ (888) 207-7106
Soft reset (clears most stuck troubles): code + 1, twice. Then press [*] to confirm nothing is still faulted.
Hard reset / power cycle: transformer out, battery disconnected, wait 60 seconds, reconnect battery, then transformer. The panel shows Busy-Standby for a minute and comes back with all codes and programming intact.
Factory default (installer-level): enter programming with the installer code (installer code + 8 + 0 + 0), then [*][9][7] to load defaults, [*][9][9] to exit. This wipes zone programming and reporting settings - do not do this on a monitored system unless your company tells you to; you'll disconnect yourself from monitoring and they'll have to re-program every zone.
Reset without any code: not possible from the keypad by design. Your options are your alarm company (remote reset), a local company (takeover - they default the panel and reprogram it), or replacement.
Unmonitored Vista that just keeps beeping? If no one monitors it and you don't use it, the only permanent fix is to disconnect both the transformer and the battery. If you do use it as a local alarm, replace the battery and clear the trouble instead.

Repair, upgrade or replace a Vista-20P in 2026?
The Vista-20P was introduced in 2003 and is still sold - so parts, keypads and sensors are cheap and any Honeywell-trained tech can work on it. A rough guide:
- Keep and repair if the only issue is a battery, a sensor, or a transformer, and the communicator is LTE. $20-$150.
- Upgrade the communicator only if it's a 3G sunset case and the sensors are fine: $150-$250 plus monitoring with a takeover-friendly company.
- Add a Tuxedo / 6290W touchscreen keypad if you want app control without replacing the panel - Vista-20P supports Total Connect 2.0 with an LTE communicator.
- Replace if the panel itself fails, multiple hardwired zones have faults, or you're facing a new 36-month contract to keep it monitored. Honeywell 5800-series wireless sensors can usually be re-enrolled on a new Honeywell / Resideo ProSeries or Qolsys panel, so you don't lose everything.

Frequently asked questions
What is the default installer code for a Vista-20P?
4112 from the factory. Dealers change it; ADT systems often use 6321 or a dealer code. The default master code is 1234.
How do I change the master code on a Vista-20P?
Current master code, then 8, then 02, then the new 4-digit code twice.
How do I add a user code?
Master code, 8, a two-digit user number (03-49), then the new 4-digit code.
What does "Check 103 LngRng Radio" mean?
The panel can't communicate with its cellular communicator. Clear with code + 1 twice; if it returns, the radio is faulty or on a shut-down 3G network and must be replaced with an LTE unit.
What does bF or 6F mean on my alarm keypad?
bF (often read as 6F) is the fixed-word version of Check 103 - a long-range radio failure.
What does FC mean on a Vista or ADT keypad?
Communication failure: the panel couldn't reach the monitoring center. Clear with code + 1 twice; recurring FC means a phone-line or communicator problem.
What battery does a Vista-20P use?
A 12 V 4-7 Ah sealed lead-acid battery (e.g. PS-1270 / UB1270). BAT with no zone number means it needs replacing.
How do I stop my Vista-20P from beeping?
Enter your code + 1 (OFF) twice. Then fix the cause - usually a low battery or AC loss.
Is the ADT Safewatch Pro 3000 the same as a Vista-20P?
Yes - it's a Vista-20P with ADT branding. All codes and sequences here apply.
Can I use a Vista-20P without ADT?
Yes. Any Honeywell-capable alarm company can take it over (new communicator and installer code), or you can run it unmonitored as a local alarm after changing the master code.
